Anais Nin - Under the Glass Bell

Under the Glass Bell

Anais Nin

Anais Nin famous french born writer and diarist.

An elegant writer perhaps summed up best with a quote from Edmund Wilson (1895-1972, American writer, critic and social commentator) who commented on this set of short stories collection by saying... "The pieces in this collection belong to a peculiar genre sometimes cultivated by Virginia Woolf. They are half short stories, half dreams, and they mix a sometimes exquisite poetry with a homely realistic observation. They take place in a special world of feminine perception and fancy, which is all the more curious and charming for being innocently international. In Miss Nin's case, the imagery ... is always appropriate. The spun glass is also alive: it is the abode of a secret creature. Half woman, half childlike spirit, she shops, employs servants, wears dresses, suffers the pains of childbirth, yet is likely at any moment to be volatilized into a superterrestrial being who feels things that we cannot feel ... "The Mouse", "Under the Glass Bell", "Ragtime", and "Birth" are really beautiful.'..."

Born in Paris in 1903 of two artistic parents and first published in 1930s. Anais Nin, is also well known for her for her affair with Henry Miller whose explicit sexual narrative in his novel titled "Tropic of Cancer" led to a major obscenity trial which bought American law on porn to open discussion. (Miller's book was widely considered as among the top of the 20th century's most influential masterpieces.) Her association in Miller's life (including her friendship to his wife, June) features also in her published and unpublished diaries and has attracted much interest over the years and culminated into the making of the 1992 Movie (with Uma Therman) simply titled "Henry and June".

Anais Nin has also published many volumes of her popular diaries, each covering various years of her life and go by the title "The Diary of Anais Nin". She released Volumes 1 through 7. She also released volumes of her early life too.
