PerfumePatrick SuskindJean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with a superior olfactory sense, creates the world's finest perfume. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent.
Against a backdrop of an 18th century Paris, this murderous tale tells of the life of an unwanted child Jean-Baptist Grenouille, who begins life shunned and taunted at every move. Born with no scent, his wet nurse wouldn't nourish him as she feared he was possessed by the devil. His peers cowered from this boy with no personal scent and Jean-Baptist grows up with out a friend. But his heightened sense of smell and brilliant memory gave him an edge over many others as he seeks to master his profession in the chemistry of perfume-making with a renown maker whom really wishes to steal Grenouille's work. To capture the essence of beauty, he embarks upon a killing spree of young girls on the brink of womanhood to take their scent. The accumulating body count enrages the city folk who want the blood of this villain. As testimony to his scent making abilities, when finally apprehended, the concocted scent actually makes his captors forgive him and set him free. But as no bad deed would go unpunished, the power of scent maybe more than Jean-Baptist Grenouille bargained for. (Please note: This book can get quite graphic at times.) Perfume was made in a film "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" in 2006 and starred Ben Whishaw as Jean-Baptist Grenouille and Dustin Hoffman as Giuseppe Baldini (master Parisian perfumer).
