Stuart Townsend's Battle in Seattle

20 September 2008 Interview: Battle in Seattle Director Stuart Townsend - Interview
Stu

cinemablend.com
Though he's famous as an actor, Stuart Townsend is clearly also some kind of egghead. Who else would take it upon themselves to research the entire world's financial system, and then make a movie about it?...

Rich: How did you shoot the big riot scenes?
Townsend: My DP gave instructions to his cameramen that there were no mistakes. Don't be afraid to just find moments. The cameramen were just having a great time. People get into it. We'd say "Cut!" and no one would hear us. We'd have to actually do this police siren, so people knew then to stop. It was like "Action!" and everyone just went for it.

Rich: Does the timing feel particularly good, given this week's financial problems?
Townsend: I started the film in 2002. I thought I would have it finished by 2004. And every year it didn't get made, I thought I missed this amazing, serendipitous event that connected. And then it would happen again and again. There have been so many examples of this failed economic system. Almost every month there's another example. It's hard to connect the dots, but the WTO and globalization I still think are the most important issues. It's more important, and will outlast, wars and anything else. We're always going to trade.

Rich:What was it like bringing this to the Democratic and Republican conventions?
Townsend: People were very polite. I was actually hoping for a little debate-- particularly with the Republicans, who believe in free markets, deregulation, privatization. I was actually really wanting someone to debate me, but no one did. People liked it... In one sense I was surprised that there weren't more hard-hitting questions. And in another sense I was like "Good." It seemed to reach out further than I thought. It plays everywhere, because essentially it's a film about people.

The full DVD version includes interviews with AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, United Steelworkers (USW) President Leo Gerard, Machinists (IAM) President Tom Buffenbarger and Teamsters (IBT) President James Hoffa, all key figures in the 1999 march.

Townsend: We have to keep this film out there for the first two weeks [after it premiers Sept. 19]. If people go out to see the film in those first two weeks, then we get to go nationwide. There were documentaries done about this event and nobody saw them. But maybe someone loves Andre Benjamin's acting and they go to see the movie and learn about the WTO. Or someone is a fan of Charlize Theron or Woody Harrelson and they go to see the movie to see them on the screen and they learn about the WTO-about labor and about standing up and using your voice. That's what it's about.

19 September 2008 Michelle Rodriguez Of Battle In Seattle - Interview
Miche

cinemablend.com
...[Michelle] Rodriguez plays Lou, a veteran protester who fits right in with the actresses past "tough girl" roles. Unafraid to talk about pretty much anything, Rodriguez talked about the violence she saw growing up in Jersey City, her many lives "like a cat," and her own real-life protest experience...

Why did you decide to do this film?
Miche

[Rodriguez:] I love people. And I really feel that America is a good place. And I feel that citizens in America are good people overall. I think that majority of people are just misinformed. Living in Los Angeles, and being an actress for 10 years, and traveling the world, has informed me so much about how we are looked at as citizens. how we are looked at as a major influence around the world. I felt that this movie captured that voice. Stuart Townsend captured that voice, the voice of the innocent and the voice of the culprits all in one. When I read the script, I didn't care if I was an extra in it. I wanted to be a part of it. I was like, "I haven't felt that good since Girlfight!" after reading the script... 19 September 2008 Film Review - Battle in Seattle - Review

kqed.org
It's refreshing, then, and simultaneously troubling to see an account of a massive street protest in Stuart Townsend's Battle in Seattle...The movie weaves together archival footage taken from the WTO protests with the fictional stories of four protestors, two riot cops, a newscaster and the mayor of Seattle...ultimately, Battle in Seattle delivers an inspirational message: activism can succeed...The movie reminds us that people can make a difference, that nonviolent protestors can make a stand for what they believe in, and can open the world's eyes to the important and troubling decisions being made behind closed doors.

Actor Stuart Townsend has starred in a number of different kinds of films over the years as well as the updated television version of "Night Stalker,"...ComingSoon.net sat down with Townsend to talk about how an actor from Ireland ended up directing one of the more impressive civil rights related non-doc films of the year....

CS: With a movie like this, and this is me being a cynical critic, you have to wonder who is going to want to go to movies on a Friday night and see a movie about riots. Obviously people who are kind of involved in this kind of thing might be interested in seeing this, but for everyone else?

Townsend: But don't they want to see Andre and Woody and Charlize and great acting and a really visual film? I definitely tried not to make this a boring film. I think the film moves at a really good pace. People have complained about certain things, but nobody's ever complained that it's a boring movie...

19 September 2008 Interview: Ray Liotta Of Battle In Seattle - Interview
Stu Stu

Ray Liotta thinks you're used to seeing him as a bad guy, or at least a thug. So when the movie Battle in Seattle came his way, offering him the chance to wear a suit and not have to punch anyone he took it.

Rich: Are there particular actors that you've been inspired by?
Liotta: When i first started it was DeNiro, Pacino, those kinds of guys. I never wanted to be an actor, and when I decided I did [in the 1970s], those were the movies that were happening. I was just becoming an actor. I was influenced by them. If anything, this movie probably belongs back then [in the 1970s].

...I really liked the movie, but this seems like kind of a nightmarish, huge-scale project to pick for your first time directing...

[Townsend:] I was definitely trying to make things as difficult as possible for myself. No, it certainly wasn't easy. Oftentimes I'd find myself thinking, God, I wish this was about two guys in a room. Like Dinner With Andre. That would have been easy. But this was a story I really wanted to tell. I was really passionate about it so I just had to go and do it. For six years. [Laughs.]....

19 September 2008 Battle in Seattlew - Review

sfgate.com
Where were you when the four-day World Trade Organization street fight erupted in Seattle in 1999? I was in Prague at the time and had a limited understanding of the actual event, but I remember the blowback hitting the Czech Republic: Protesters smashed a window at McDonald's, and anti-corporate and WTO stickers and graffiti grew like kudzu over city walls...

The best parts of the film are the actual protests, re-created using archival footage. Like any good military battle scenes, they are infused with the thrill and fear of combat. "Battle in Seattle" also captures the aesthetics of the protesters. Bandanas, cargo pants, hoodies, stickers and patches galore, along with the street puppets and butterfly wings. Poor André Benjamin, who is something of a dandy in real life, has to wear a knit hat that looks like a piece of a bath mat.

19 September 2008 Film revisits the Battle in Seattle - Minnesota Public Radio

minnesota.publicradio.org
... In 1999 the anti-globalization movement was huge and gaining strength. Tens of thousands of protesters traveled to Seattle to demonstrate against what they saw as a misuse of the World Trade Organization's powers. As the film shows, the media anticipated there would be trouble. Townsend says the popular image of the WTO protests is of anarchists smashing up downtown Seattle and the police responding. But he says what actually happened was very different. sbd alert sbd alert

Instead of random acts of violence, he found non-violent protesters carefully planned ways of preventing delegates from getting to the meetings. For example, protesters chained themselves together at key points throughout the city. "Their tactics were just so effective that they shut this conference down, and that was unacceptable to the authorities," he said. "And they responded with non-lethal weapons. They basically went for these protesters who were completely peaceful. Only after the fact did downtown start to get smashed up, and the response grew even stronger." The violence on the streets of Seattle played across the world's TV screens. Stuart Townsend says he believes in the importance of dissent, but he stresses what happened in Seattle was very complicated, and he tried to cover as many viewpoints as he could. ....

17 September 2008 'Battle in Seattle' is Gripping and Intense from Start to Finish...

Battle in Seattle focuses on the event that made my friend want to join The Movement in the first place: The WTO protests in Seattle in 1999...His story punctuates the brutal lows and fleeting highs that the rest of the characters march through. It's a story arc where everyone is fighting for something they believe in - order, freedom, corporate responsibility, geopolitical disenfranchisement - but every voice is so loud, that no one is heard. It is frustrating, but it's a frustration to revel in, a world that Townsend and company dissolve you into in order to tell a story that's not easy to hear... ...Who makes history? Is it the great man, the great mass, or the great revolutionary vanguard?...Townsend has made no secret that Battle in Seattle aspires to be a contemporary version of Medium Cool-the 1970 drama that Haskell Wexler managed to set amid the 1968 Democratic convention....Battle in Seattle is too frantic to make more than a transitory impression, yet too responsibly hackneyed in its characterizations to achieve pure tabloid hysteria. In that sense, it's true to the actual event... J. Hoberman's story here!

15 Sep 2008 Huffington Post's Brad Listi interviews Stuart Townsend
Stuart_Ray95162

We Are Winning:

...Recently I had a chance to sit down with the actor Stuart Townsend. A native of Ireland, Townsend has appeared in a variety of films and television shows, and he has now taken on his most ambitious project to date: writing, directing, and producing Battle in Seattle, a movie centered on the WTO riots of 1999. Battle makes its debut in select theaters on September 19th. New York magazine has called it "a triumph," and Jeffrey Lyons of NBC's Reel Talk has hailed it as "a compelling and impassioned film with powerful performances."

The film's large ensemble cast includes Woody Harrelson, Ray Liotta, Andre Benjamin, Connie Nielsen, Channing Tatum, Michelle Rodriguez, Martin Henderson, and Townsend's longtime girlfriend, Oscar-winner Charlize Theron.

...It started when I read a book by Anita Roddick called "Take It Personally," which is sort of a primer for anyone interested in the subject...And then I actually cut together a fifteen-minute film of actual documentary footage from the riots in rough chronological order as a sort of visual compendium, and that really changed things. People saw the drama. They saw the action. And that was how it got financed. Still, it was a pretty small budget for what we needed to do...Get prepared to have your ass handed to you. That's the way it goes. But it's understandable that celebrities would advocate. Celebrities are artists. Usually, artists are a product of their environment. They're able to distill something from contemporary life and communicate it in a unique way. So it's understandable that they would want to be patriotic and stand up for what they believe in. Look at a guy like Sean Penn. He's an American. As an American, I think it's his right to speak out. And he does. He goes to Iraq. He goes to New Orleans. And he understands the issues. He's not just an actor who's lending his name to a cause...

1 Sep 2008 The Battle for Reality - Article

by David Solnit
Yes Magazine, Fall 2008
...My stomach clenched the first time I heard that actor Stuart Townsend was making a mainstream movie about the 1999 shutdown of the WTO ministerial meetings, Battle in Seattle. I was an on-the-ground organizer in Seattle, and for me and many other activists, the event was a high point in our social change work. It was a moment when organized resistance became a genuine popular uprising, successfully shutting down the opening day of the WTO meeting, taking over the downtown core of a major American city, and contributing to the collapse of negotiations that would have increased poverty, destruction, and misery around the world...

...Two years ago, Stuart Townsend called me up. He had heard that I was involved in the organizing that led up to the Seattle protests...I asked to read the script and offer feedback. Townsend finally agreed just as he began filming in Vancouver, British Columbia. I pored over the script for three days in the back room of his production offices and was required to hand it back each day before I left. I circulated a summary for feedback to a group of activists I'd worked with in Seattle. I wrote up an analysis of problems we saw in the script, then met with Townsend and his assistant on the fourth day of filming...

...My attempt to engage with Townsend's movie helped me see how important it is for members of social movements to tell our own stories-not just about Seattle, but about all our struggles and victories-and to tell them loudly, publicly, and compellingly...

10 November 2006 "Battle In Seattle" Vancouver Casting Call

kat14's post here

Casting Call

We are in search of volunteers to be extras in a film based on one of the most incendiary uprisings in a generation.

"Battle in Seattle" takes an in depth look at the five days that rocked the world in 1999 as tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest of the World Trade Organization.

This will be a unique opportunity to participate in the production of an extraordinary film. The location will be in the Vancouver area and food will be provided throughout each day. This is a topical & controversial independent feature and our budget is low.

We are seeking activists with a passion for taking it to the streets when the cameras are rolling, who are willing to volunteer their time to be part of a film that will tell a story of profound global importance, a story the mass media suppressed and a story that is, in itself, a movement for human rights and environmental justice.

* Job location is Vancouver

Stuart Townsend: When I first came across the story in 2002, I was reading this book called 'Take it Personally,' which is about globalization.
